The Art of Green

Jack Byrnes: I'm just curious, did you pick the color of the car?
Greg Focker: Uh no, the guy at the window did, why?
Jack Byrnes: Well they say geniuses pick green.
Greg Focker: Oh.
Jack Byrnes: But you didn't pick it.

- From the motion picture Meet The Parents (2000)

According to, the color green represents nature, tranquility, good luck, health, and jealousy. It can also improve reading ability and is apparently a symbol of fertility. Most notably is relieves stress and gives a calming effect.

Green is a great color to use in any room. However, I don't really think I would like green as a paint color in my bedroom; although it seems to be associated with all the attributes you may want in a bedroom. If I think about it, I don't think I've ever seen anyone I know use it as a paint color in their bedroom. I wonder why that is? The below pics, however, may work to persuade me. The color green, however, exists in some form in almost any home.

Many paint colors with a green tint to them somehow work to give a contemporary effect (check out Tavern Taupe by Sherwin Williams and Indian Rhubarb by Benjamin Moore). Always remember, colors exist outside its purest form. Play around a bit with different shades and tones. You can find a shade you like with almost any color.

  1. I have to retract the statement I made that I don't know anyone personally that has green paint on their walls. I do have a friend with a green room and it looks nice. A green room with the perfect bedding and some white candles sounds perfectly Zen.

  2. Great I am glad to see I am not the only person who likes green. I painted my bedroom the exact color of green as picture #3 (IKEA). I was thinking about using blue, gold and brown accents to counter the boldness / loudness of the green. What do you think?

  3. Anedra, I think when using a color as vibrant as that green in the Ikea picture, you should use more subdued colors. I think white would pop against that green masterfully. I do think a dark brown would work as well. Even a black and white motif would add an interesting without being to overpowering (as seen in the rug in the picture). Send me a pic of the bathroom, and I will give you some ideas.
